“Don’t be troubled. Trust in God. Trust also in me. My Father’s house has room to spare. If that weren’t the case, would I have told you that I’m going to prepare a place for you? When I go to prepare a place for you, I will return and take you to be with me so that where I am you will be too. You know the way to the place I’m going.”

Think

On the night which Jesus knew to be his last with his disciples, he gave them a pep talk. He knew they were afraid. He knew they had so many questions about the future. He knew that they would go through so many hard emotions before they’d meet again. So just the right words were needed. And they were simple: trust in God. Trust also in me.

I can imagine that trust me is not what the disciples wanted to hear. They would have loved a 10-step action plan, a window into the future, or “I’m going to call the hard stuff off” decree.

But instead, Jesus said: trust me.

You don’t get to be in charge if you’re trusting someone. You don’t get to make the plan. You don’t get a re-do on the ending. That can be hard. But trust looks beyond what is known to what might be! And this is where the comfort lies. Jesus can do the impossible and wonderful in our lives as we give over all our trust.

Jesus, thank you for giving us the gift of trust. Giving you control of my life of course feels scary sometimes, but I believe you are worthy of my trust. Amen.
