Ordinary Time

Pause

We are never alone. Our lives are knit together with those around us. What we do has the power to affect others. And God is present and active in our relationships and in our very being.

God is with you. Breathe deep the reality of God’s presence. Remember. Realize. God is with you.

Listen

God’s handiwork is honesty and justice; all God’s rules are trustworthy— they are established always and forever: they are fulfilled with truth and right doing. God sent redemption for his people; God commanded that his covenant last forever. Holy and awesome is God’s name! Fear of the Lord is where wisdom begins; sure knowledge is for all who keep God’s laws. God’s praise lasts forever!

Psalm 111:7-10

Think

How do you know what is good? How do you know what is from God? These are questions we all should be asking, and probably do without even realizing it. But what are we using as our measuring stick? How do we know if something actually measures up? Today we are challenged to remember to look for “honesty and justice,” “truth and right doing.” These are good things that require us to move out of ourselves, for no one person holds these things within themselves completely.

These ideas, these measuring sticks, require us to spend time in community looking at how we understand our own actions and the actions of others. They invite us to consider how a decision will impact all those involved and to seek the most good, not just what is easy or beneficial to us alone. God’s law, God’s way of doing life is lived out together. Take time today to discuss with your family and/or friends about what makes something good, and how you can encourage each other in honesty, justice, truth, and right doing.

Pray

God, thank you for the gift of community and that I don’t have to figure everything out by myself. Help me to think beyond myself and live into your law, your way of living. Amen.
