Ordinary Time

Pause

Listen to the Mustn'ts, child,
listen to the Don'ts.
Listen to the Shouldn'ts,
the Impossibles, the Won'ts.
Listen to the Never Haves,
then listen close to me.
Anything can happen, child,
Anything can be.

from Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein (1974)

When the world is giving you more than you think you can handle…

When you’re ready to say, “Enough already!”…

God says, “Listen close to me. All things are possible through my love.”

Listen

Israel, wait for the Lord! Because faithful love is with the Lord; because great redemption is with our God! He is the one who will redeem Israel from all its sin.

Psalm 130:7-8

Think

If I could pick a superpower, I’d choose to control time. I get frustrated when things don’t happen as quickly as I’d like them to.

God’s timing can be tough to understand, and yet I believe that God is at work in every corner and alley and relationship in the universe. So what do I do when I see people hurting and don’t know how to help them? What do I do when I witness systems of oppression that strip the worth and dignity from God’s beloved children? I do two things: first, I trust that God knows more about everything than I do, and second, I get to work. I get to work helping to create God’s kingdom on earth. I love. I forgive. I pray. I fight for justice.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Yes, it does, Dr. King, yes it does. Our real super power is that we have the power of God on our side.

Carrie Zimmerman

Pray

I can feel you at work in our world, God.

I can feel your power in our communities.

I can feel your love as we work toward justice.

Amen.

Go

Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The light and love of God is enough to conquer all darkness, hate, and fear.

Today, and every day, walk through your life trusting in the power of God’s love.
