Following the Star

Pause

You are being called to journey, and no journey is easy.

Don’t be afraid for this is one you don’t walk alone.

Take a deep breath and get ready… your journey awaits.

Listen

Then Herod secretly called for the magi and found out from them the time when the star had first appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search carefully for the child. When you’ve found him, report to me so that I too may go and honor him.” When they heard the king, they went; and look, the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stood over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were filled with joy.

Matthew 2:7-10

Think

In today’s passage, the Magi resume their star-following journey. Their pit-stop in the courts of King Herod didn’t give them an audience with the king they sought. As they leave, Herod says to them, “go and search carefully for the child. When you’ve found him, report to me so that I too may go and honor him.” While we’ll later see that there are ulterior motives to Herod’s desires, it is clear here that he does not understand what it means to follow the path of Christ.

For Herod, the Magi, and us, the call of God is always to journey. A life of seeking the light of Christ is not one of sitting still or of expecting others to do the work but one of personal action. If we want to truly experience the presence of Christ in our lives and in our world, we’ve got to be willing to do the work of journeying to find him.

Is your journey with Christ one of movement? What work needs to be done to get you going?

Pray

God of action, help me to hear your call to journey. Help me to realize that this journey is not one that I’ll complete today or tomorrow but one that will last my entire life. Like the Magi, help me to find joy in my journeying today. Amen.

Go

Christ is calling you to journey with him, to share his light with the world.

Where will today’s journey lead?

Only one way to find out…
