Ordinary Time

Pause

Will you let me be your servant,
let me be as Christ to you?
Pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant, too.

Richard Gillard in “The Servant Song” (1977)

Listen

Lord, you have been our help, generation after generation. Before the mountains were born, before you birthed the earth and the inhabited world— from forever in the past to forever in the future, you are God.

Psalm 90:1-2

Think

Do you faithfully serve God wherever you are? This week’s devotions are all about being a faithful servant.

Why should I be a faithful servant?, we might ask. Or we might start by asking why we would serve someone else at all… not to mention faithfully! In middle school I wanted to wrestle like my friends. It was cool to be a wrestler. However, the basketball coach demanded I play basketball. So whom did I serve? My own wishes? My friends? The basketball coach? The team? I chose basketball, and quite frankly my heart was not 100% in it.

But what if we’re talking about serving God? God created everything — including us — and God loves us! God loves us to such an extent that Jesus came to offer us eternal life. Jesus was sent for YOU, so that your sins would be forgiven and you would have eternal, abundant life, that starts now. With such overwhelming love for us, how can we not be a faithful servant of the Holy?

Pray

Gracious God, thank you for creating me the way I am. Show me how to be a faithful servant and give me the courage to do so. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Go

Go in peace and serve the Lord.
