Back down in the Moabite plains, the Israelites mourned Moses’ death for thirty days. At that point, the time for weeping and for mourning Moses was over.

Joshua, Nun’s son, was filled with wisdom because Moses had placed his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to Joshua, and they did exactly what the Lord commanded Moses.

No prophet like Moses has yet emerged in Israel; Moses knew the Lord face-to-face! That’s not even to mention all those signs and wonders that the Lord sent Moses to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh, to all his servants, and to his entire land— as well as all the extraordinary power that Moses displayed before Israel’s own eyes!

Have you ever done something nice for someone else, and the person didn’t even say thank you? In school, I helped a buddy each day for a year with his French homework, and he did not even say merci. Sheesh!

Yesterday’s devotion was about how Moses did a great deal for his people. There is little evidence of people thanking him for his service to God and his people. In fact, we read in the Bible about how the people often complained about too much walking and about the food. However, after Moses died, the people mourned him for thirty days. They thanked him after he died.

When you are a faithful servant of God, you might not get a thank you, but the true reward is from God. Our great God provides so much more than silly accolades when we serve faithfully. I lost all my sports trophies, but I have God. My papers graded “A” are gone, but I have God. Get the picture?

Gracious Lord, as I serve you, remind me that I will not always receive thanks or praise from others. However, let me serve because of my love for you. Encourage me with the knowledge that you are pleased by my service. Amen.
