Ordinary Time

Pause

Jesus, Light of the world, come and sit with me.

Shine your wisdom unto me.

Jesus, Light of my life, come and be still with me.

Direct me in your truth.

Listen

Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues. He announced the good news of the kingdom and healed every disease and sickness among the people.

Matthew 4:23

Think

Negative headlines are a dime a dozen. A fast Twitter search or quick perusal through the most recent newsfeed confirms this. Innocent victims of civil war, a divided nation, protests and divisions, and violent shootings, to name a few. It seems much harder to find pearls of hope, stories of everyday people who are making a meaningful difference in the lives of others and their local communities. If we pay attention, however, and look carefully, those people and their stories of courage and hope are the ones that shine through the mess, making space for others to do the same.

I’m convinced that this is how the world outside the church walls on a Sunday morning experiences the gospel message. It is good news to read about a young girl winning her battle over cancer, a community of youth organizing a local food drive, and schools addressing mental health issues among teenagers. If you look carefully, you can find good news, the gospel news. I’m ready to seek, find, and be part of that kind of news. Are you?

Pray

Jesus, you are the good news of hope and salvation. Thank you for the ways you heal my pain, especially through the powerful stories of people living with and in faith. Help me to be an active part of the gospel message today, so that your gospel message is good news to all. Amen.

Go

Christ my Redeemer, be alive and real in my life.

Christ my Friend, be near and true to your word.

Christ my Light, be honored in what I say and do.
