Ordinary Time

Pause

We fully open our hearts to you, O God, as we give.

Listen

Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I assure you that this poor widow has put in more than everyone who’s been putting money in the treasury. All of them are giving out of their spare change. But she from her hopeless poverty has given everything she had, even what she needed to live on.”

Mark 12:43-44

Think

I once went on a mission trip to West Virginia. When we got there, we were taken aback by the poverty. Since I wasn’t very handy, I was put on a painting team in a run-down house. When I got there, I noticed a book the owner was reading. I mentioned that I was going to read it, and she asked me if I wanted her copy. It blew me away that someone who had so little was giving something away. However, she did have something, and that was a huge heart – a heart of giving and a heart of love.

So, when we give it all, I wonder if God is looking not just at what we give, but the heart behind the giving. Do we give our time to do mission work, so we can be in the newspaper? Or because we have a heart for it? Are we loudly giving, or are we giving because of our heart? Look at your heart before you give. God is looking.

Pray

God, before I give my all, let me look at my heart. Direct me to give because of love, not in order to look good. Amen.

Go

Someone once said: “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”

Go out today to make your life by giving.

Give love, give joy, give selflessly, give generously.

Give your all.
