Ordinary Time

Pause

The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades.

God's presence deepens our joys, comforts our concerns, and settles our restlessness.

Take time to look into the brights and darks and grays of your day.

Seek the One whose glory shines in the light and through the darkness.

Listen

Six days later Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them to the top of a very high mountain. He was transformed in front of them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light.

Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus. Peter reacted to all of this by saying to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good that we’re here. If you want, I’ll make three shrines: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

Matthew 17:1-4

Think

Jesus’ disciples had followed him through towns and countryside, and listened to his teachings in story, prophecy, and sermon. They observed him while he healed the sick, fed the hungry, and redefined the law itself. Now the disciples followed him to the mountain. As Peter, James, and John joined Jesus on this unique day-trip, they were still discovering that life in the presence of the Holy One would bring constant surprises.

They watched while Jesus’ body was changed in a physical expression of God’s shining glory. They had seen his miracles, the way he changed the lives of those around him, and now they witnessed his own transformation.

They listened while Jesus stood talking with Moses and Elijah. They had learned new ways to believe and to live from him, and now they witnessed his deep relationship with the ancient heroes of their faith.

The disciples followed him to the mountain, watching and listening… and Peter, for one, wanted to stay there!

Pray

Just like Peter, I want to remain in your presence, God. I can't always understand the wonders you do, but I recognize your glory when it shines before my eyes, and I want to live with it. I praise you, for you are still bringing transformation! Amen.

Go

May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

May God’s continuing presence shine through you, bringing joy, comfort, and calm.

Through you, may others be inspired to praise God!
