Following the Star

Pause

As we journey through Advent, we would be wise to remember that is in fact a journey – not just for the Biblical cast, but for us as well.

Prepare yourselves today to listen for the word and guidance of God as we, too, follow the star closer to the heart of God.

Listen

I surely rejoice in the Lord; my heart is joyful because of my God, because he has clothed me with clothes of victory, wrapped me in a robe of righteousness like a bridegroom in a priestly crown, and like a bride adorned in jewelry. As the earth puts out its growth, and as a garden grows its seeds, so the Lord God will grow righteousness and praise before all the nations.

Isaiah 61:10-11

Think

Isaiah once again reminds us what lies before us when we have God with us. Remember that the Israelites knew what struggle was like, as they had been forced to leave their homes and country and live in exile for many years. During this time they had to rely on their faith and the stories handed down to them. While the exile made them feel like they were in a drought period in their lives, their faith stories were seeds of joy planted for future harvest.

How good it is to have God with you! Sing this song with Isaiah: a reminder of how great it feels – like a bride and groom on their wedding day, wrapped in the finest robes – when our hearts are full of joy. And out of that joy a garden of God’s goodness grows throughout the world.

The best part? It grows through us! We’re the seeds planted all around the world!

Pray

Joy-giving God, I thank you for the joy I have in you and the reminder that I am a seed of your praise helping to grow your righteousness among the nations. Guide me, God, like the northern star, as I share the joy I find in you with others. Amen.

Go

Look today for the stars in your life, providing guidance along the journey towards the heart of God – your mission in this world.

And go, following bravely and joyfully, wherever the star may lead you as you make Christ’s presence in the world known.
