Listen

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns.

The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Psalm 46:1-7

Think

I was in college when I had a car accident that could’ve easily taken my life. Wet from rain, the road caused my car to hydroplane from the highway into oncoming traffic and an 18-wheeler. The fact that I walked unscratched away from a totaled vehicle was an absolute miracle.

I knew, as I walked away that day, that so many things could’ve been different. I could’ve been severely injured; I or others could have died. One thing would have remained the same, though: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Sometimes each day is difficult. School doesn’t come easily, bullies make life hard, we have problems at home, or lose someone we love. When so much sadness can seem overwhelming, God offers a very present refuge – a place of hope and security.

Boldly seek the security of God as you face what pains you, knowing that God does not, and will not, abandon you.

Pray

God of refuge, as I face fear, pain, loss, or struggle, bring me comfort, strength, and perseverance. Remind me of your presence, and encourage me to bring that presence to others as well. In the name of the Creator, Son, and Holy Spirit, Amen.

Go

Go forward in confidence of the rule and reign of Christ, the community of fellow believers, and the hope that is to be fulfilled.

Remember Jesus Christ as lowly infant, humble carpenter, and servant king. Remember him as invisible God made flesh, firstborn of creation, everlasting Prince of Peace.

Live fully into the abundant life offered you, and give thanks.
