Jesus Christ is king over a kingdom of sinners-turned-saints by the redemption in his blood. We are made new by his sacrifice. We are made holy by God’s mercy. We are made alive by the working of the Spirit within.
Enter into a time of connection with this great God, this mighty king, this moving Spirit. Worship the One who is worthy of true worship.
When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!”
Luke 23:33-35
When Jesus came, many expected him to be a typical king: crown, robe, army, etc. He didn’t look anything like that, though. He redefined king. He came in a manger and worked as a carpenter. He befriended those that others hated. He chose obedience over power, even while he hung dying on the cross.
Jesus knew it wasn’t about the jewels, wardrobe, armies, or kingdoms. It wasn’t about the expectations of the world. And it’s the same for us today. We aren’t kings and queens, but we do face expectations for what we “should” be. Rich. Famous. Popular. Athletic. Beautiful.
Who said those are what make life good or what make us happy? Not Jesus. Jesus chose love, humility, and a life lived for God – even as he hung dying on the cross.
Breaking expectations isn’t easy, but it does free us to live into the beautiful, rich life God desires for us. May God empower you today to break free from this world’s expectations, and live into the life Christ offers.

Creator, enable me to break free from false expectations and embrace your abundant life in ways of obedience. Empower me to be defined by your Word and your example, and not fleeting guides. In the name of the Creator, Son, and Holy Spirit, Amen.
Go forward in confidence of the rule and reign of Christ, the community of fellow believers, and the hope that is to be fulfilled.
Remember Jesus Christ as lowly infant, humble carpenter, and servant king. Remember him as invisible God made flesh, firstborn of creation, everlasting Prince of Peace.
Live fully into the abundant life offered you, and give thanks.
