Listening for God requires us to be tuned in with all of our senses. God may speak to us through our ears, but more often God speaks to us through our hearts, minds, souls, and even our bodies.
We need to learn to be open to listening to God on God’s terms, not necessarily our own.
Stop and prepare to hear from God today!
The Lord is on my side to help me; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in mortals.
Psalm 118:7-8
Have you ever gotten burned by a friend? You had trust and confidence in them and BOOM, they let you down? Putting confidence in oneself is hard enough, much less putting it in someone else. Perhaps that is why it is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people. This does not mean that all people are untrustworthy. Having God as your walking partner down the long halls at school, on the field or court, or even out with family or friends is a confident feeling. But what does that mean, “on my side”?
I wonder what it would have been like for Frodo to be without Samwise in Lord of the Rings, or for Harry in Harry Potter to be without Hagrid. These relationships are human (or mortal as the passage states) but somewhat illustrate the companionship we look for in God – someone to cry out to; someone who will always be there for us.
