Back to School

Pause

I close my eyes and breathe, inviting peace.

I open my heart and breathe, inviting love.

My soul rejoices, knowing God is with me.

Listen

Don’t be conformed to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you can figure out what God’s will is—what is good and pleasing and mature.

Romans 12:2

Think

My daughter is a rising senior in high school, and thinking about what comes next is a major topic of discussion for our whole family. High school students face so much pressure; I know that who I am now is very different from what I had thought when I was 16. I also know that the more certain I was that I HAD to do something, the more likely it was that God was trying to encourage me in another direction.

The theologian Howard Thurman’s Baccalaureate address at Spelman College in 1980 spoke to the idea of listening for God’s voice. He said to listen for the sound of the genuine in yourself — not what other people are telling you to do, but what God is calling you to do. As Thurman stated, “…if you cannot hear the sound of the genuine in you, you will all of your life spend your days on the ends of strings that somebody else pulls.”

How will you pray to help you listen for the sound of the genuine in yourself?

Pray

Good and Gracious God, bless and renew my mind, that I may hear the sound of the genuine in me and be formed and transformed to your will. Amen.

Go

Let peace remind me to enter with love.

Let love remind me to make space for God.

May God’s grace help me to see and be seen!
