As Jesus passed alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” Right away, they left their nets and followed him. After going a little farther, he saw James and John, Zebedee’s sons, in their boat repairing the fishing nets. At that very moment he called them. They followed him, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers.

In the age of social media, following has never been easier. You just click follow on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Soon after you can begin to measure “influence” in likes, shares, and retweets. You can follow celebrity gossip, news sites, sports, fashion, or even pin your favorite recipes all without a single in-person interaction. It’s easy – until it’s not.

Each new day in the news, we seem to discover a reason to think less of someone we thought highly of, no matter how much we really knew about them to begin with. We express outrage for a minute or two, and yet soon enough we fall right back into our daily routine, following the same, tired stuff.

What would it take for you to be able to drop everything? Are you willing to let go of your grip of the familiar to try something new? There are no promises that the journey ahead will be easy, but Jesus is one worth really following.

God of new beginnings, help me break away from the security blanket of the routine, so that I may free my hands, feet, and heart to follow you. Amen.
