Journey to the Cross

Pause

Peace be with you.

Listen

May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ be blessed! On account of his vast mercy, he has given us new birth. You have been born anew into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. You have a pure and enduring inheritance that cannot perish—an inheritance that is presently kept safe in heaven for you. Through his faithfulness, you are guarded by God’s power so that you can receive the salvation he is ready to reveal in the last time.

1 Peter 1:3-5

Think

On October 23, 2014, I got an unexpected phone call informing me that my dad was found dead in his yard. He had suffered a massive heart attack. As his next-of-kin, I travelled to his home to make funeral arrangements and handle his estate. I am writing this devotion on what would have been his 69th birthday, and many memories are flooding my mind. Dad didn’t have a bunch of worldly possessions to leave me and my sister as an inheritance. He lived a simple life, and I like to think I inherited some of that way of thinking and living. He took nothing with him. There are a few of his items at my house and my sister’s, and they will eventually perish.

I believe Dad is enjoying the inheritance that is referenced in this scripture, an inheritance that is free from blemish. It is non-perishable. He has experienced a new birth, and his new life is much different from what he experienced here. No more war, pain, or suffering. Resurrection Life.

Pray

God, thank you for the living hope you have given me. Help me refrain from spending so much time and energy on material things that will not last. I know you have held nothing back, and my inheritance is perfect. Amen.

Go

You might have come here in pieces. Receive the Holy Spirit. Go in peace.
