Don’t do anything for selfish purposes, but with humility think of others as better than yourselves. Instead of each person watching out for their own good, watch out for what is better for others.

Philippians 2:3-4

Think

In my Bible, this section of scripture has a heading that reads, “Imitating Christ’s Humility.” This is the Bible that I used in seminary, and I don’t remember doing this, but in pencil next to the heading I wrote “Easier said than done!” Who knows what was happening in the thick of my seminary life, but it’s true, imitating Christ’s humility is no easy task.

We have to know that we are always going to fall short because we are not, after all, Jesus.

Knowing that we will never achieve the perfect humility that Christ exuded does not give us an out. Even though we will come up short, we still try. Each and every day we set a goal to be as Christ-like as possible. Some days we will be so far off, other days we will be a bit closer, but nevertheless we try. Look out for others, strive for selflessness, embody unconditional love — as best you can.

Pray

Magnificent Lord, I bow before you in humble adoration. You teach me truths that help me to live life with you at my center. Comfort me in the failures, and help me to celebrate the joys that a Christ-like life is sure to bring. Amen.

Go

Remember that in Matthew 18:20, Jesus tells us: “For where two or three are gathered in my name, I’m there with them.” God is present in the midst of our squads, no matter what they look like.

Go now into your day, and as you go:

Be in relationship.

Seek out God’s children.

Meet them with love.

Practice kindness.

Live together in peace.

Know that God is there.
