Pause

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown? Will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

from “The Summons” by John L. Bell & Graham Maule

Listen

With what should I approach the Lord and bow down before God on high? Should I come before him with entirely burned offerings, with year-old calves? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with many torrents of oil? Should I give my oldest child for my crime; the fruit of my body for the sin of my spirit? He has told you, human one, what is good and what the Lord requires from you: to do justice, embrace faithful love, and walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:6-8

Think

Sometimes it can feel like knowing how to live out a life of faith is a giant mystery. Will this decision please God? Can I do this thing and still be a Christian? How do I know if I am growing in my faith? How do I make a difference? And then we read passages like Micah 6:6-8 where the people of God are asking their version of the same question. What does God want from us? And thankfully we’re given an answer – God wants us to do justice, embrace faithful love, and walk humbly with God. Yes, easier said than done, but it’s not a mystery.

Now the question is not what does God want me to do but instead where – where is God calling me to step up and out to live a life of justice, faithful love, and discipleship? May we have eyes to see and ears to hear where those places and situations may be this week.

Pray

Holy God, when I feel like I don’t know how to best follow you, remind me to live out a life of your justice, faithful love, and humble discipleship. Give me boldness through your grace to step out, to serve you, and to love others. Amen.

Go

Lord your summons echoes true when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you and never be the same.
In Your company I'll go where Your love and footsteps show.
Thus I'll move and live and grow in you and you in me.
