Pause

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown? Will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

from “The Summons” by John L. Bell & Graham Maule

Listen

Little children, let’s not love with words or speech but with action and truth. This is how we will know that we belong to the truth and reassure our hearts in God’s presence.

1 John 3:18-19

Think

I’ve found that it is certainly easier to love with words and social media posts and statements than it is to love with actions. Sometimes I have a lack of desire to act, and sometimes I just don’t know what to do. I can say “I don’t agree with that” or “we should stop this unjust policy.” And yet, when the time comes to call someone in power or march or reach out and assist or give money, sometimes I fall short. So have I really loved those neighbors? Or have I just loved the idea of loving those neighbors (or looking like I do)?

What might it look like for us to make a practice of loving in action before speaking or writing or posting our statement of love? Might we do more? Or learn something new? Or perhaps even feel the peace that comes from drawing closer to God’s presence? I’m willing to give it a try and see. Care to join me?

Pray

God of love and truth, lead me to love with action before words. Empower me to love my neighbors and my enemies in how I act and how I speak. Help me to live in truth and love and draw near to you, so I need no other assurance or audience for my love. Amen.

Go

Lord your summons echoes true when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you and never be the same.
In Your company I'll go where Your love and footsteps show.
Thus I'll move and live and grow in you and you in me.
