Ordinary Time

Pause

There are a lot of uncertainties in our lives. Relationships don’t always last. Possessions can be taken away or lost. Our abilities can change or even leave us over time. Nothing on this earth is unconditional and true.

And yet, over and over God proves that we can trust in the Lord for all of our needs. We can find rest for our souls in knowing that God always does what is promised. God always loves us, God always shows us the path we should follow, and God blesses us when we simply trust in who God is.

Listen

Praise the Lord! I thank the Lord with all my heart in the company of those who do right, in the congregation.

The works of the Lord are magnificent; they are treasured by all who desire them.

God’s deeds are majestic and glorious. God’s righteousness stands forever.

God is famous for his wondrous works. The Lord is full of mercy and compassion.

God gives food to those who honor him. God remembers his covenant forever.

God proclaimed his powerful deeds to his people and gave them what had belonged to other nations.

God’s handiwork is honesty and justice; all God’s rules are trustworthy— they are established always and forever: they are fulfilled with truth and right doing.

God sent redemption for his people; God commanded that his covenant last forever. Holy and awesome is God’s name!

Psalm 111:1-9

Think

Have you ever played the game, Two Truths & A Lie? Each person tells the group two statements that are true about themselves, and they tell one statement that is a lie. It is the group’s job to figure out which of the statements is the lie. This is sometimes really tough to do! We can’t always trust people. We can’t always take people at their words.

But the scripture today reminds us that we can trust that God is who God claims to be. We can trust that God has always been full of mercy, compassion, honesty, and justice, and we can trust that God always will be full of those things! Even when our friends or our family or others may let us down, we can be confident that God will not let us down. God wants to be in relationship with us and prove to us that God is trustworthy and will always be caring for us and providing for our deepest needs. Do you want that type of relationship with God?

Pray

Dear God, thank you for being trustworthy. You always do what you said you will do, and I am grateful you want to be in a relationship with me that reflects that. Amen.

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
