Ordinary Time

Pause

There are a lot of uncertainties in our lives. Relationships don’t always last. Possessions can be taken away or lost. Our abilities can change or even leave us over time. Nothing on this earth is unconditional and true.

And yet, over and over God proves that we can trust in the Lord for all of our needs. We can find rest for our souls in knowing that God always does what is promised. God always loves us, God always shows us the path we should follow, and God blesses us when we simply trust in who God is.

Listen

So concerning the actual food involved in these sacrifices to false gods, we know that a false god isn’t anything in this world, and that there is no God except for the one God. Granted, there are so-called “gods,” in heaven and on the earth, as there are many gods and many lords. However, for us believers,

There is one God the Father. All things come from him, and we belong to him. And there is one Lord Jesus Christ. All things exist through him, and we live through him.

1 Corinthians 8:4-6

Think

What or whom do you love more than anything? Maybe it’s a sport you play, music you enjoy, a relationship you have, or maybe a possession that you own. While those are all good things, God asks us to be careful that we don’t allow things that we love to take the place of God in our lives. We shouldn’t let them become an idol, a so-called “god.”

Nothing on this earth — no person or thing or activity — can offer us what God does.

God is the only constant in our lives now and will be forever. All of the other things will pass away. If we are going to live as Christians, our lives would reflect that God is our first priority. What might need to change in your life so that God could truly be the only god?

Pray

Dear God, forgive me when I place other things above you. Please remind me that all I need is to depend on you alone and nothing here that the earth can offer me. Amen.

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
