What good is love, really, unless it is true?

Actually, love requires trust, and none is more trustworthy than our Creator.

Trust God now to show you trustworthy love, and to grow it more deeply within you.

Listen

If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.

John 15:7-8

Think

My all-time favorite movie is “The Princess Bride.” From the very beginning, Westley shows his love for Buttercup by responding to her every request with “As you wish.” The boy to whom this story is being told whines and asks his grandfather to skip over the mushy parts. But at the end, when the boy asks to hear the story again tomorrow, his grandfather answers, “As you wish.”

Like Westley to Buttercup, like the grandfather to his grandson, God loves us and delights in doing good things for us. Like the boy, as we grow and mature in God’s love, we learn to ask for more mature things. I have prayed for a lot of childish things that I’ve never received. But when I ask God to stay close by me, to help me love others, and to prepare a path for me, I feel sure I can hear God say, “As you wish.”

Pray

O God, thank you for your generous love. Help me to grow and mature in your love each day. Enable me to say to the people crying out for love all around me, “As you wish.” Amen.
