God has revealed these things to us through the Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, including the depths of God. Who knows a person’s depths except their own spirit that lives in them? In the same way, no one has known the depths of God except God’s Spirit. We haven’t received the world’s spirit but God’s Spirit so that we can know the things given to us by God.

1 Corinthians 2:10-12

Think

There are several things which only we can know about ourselves, unless we tell them to other people. The same is true with God. The only way we can know God’s being is if God tells us — and even then, what we have are the beginnings of further investigation, not facts to be recited.

This lies at the center of this week’s reflections. Wisdom, compassion, love, and justice are all qualities of God, revealed to us in Jesus Christ. They must be given by God. And so if we wish to learn wisdom, if we wish to learn what it is like for us to be wise, compassionate, loving, and just, then we must learn it from God too.

And so we have the Spirit, through whom these things are revealed. We have the Spirit, who directs our eyes and our hearts to God. And we have the Spirit, who challenges the views we already have, so that we can be brought into the wisdom of learning who God really is.

Holy Spirit, I pray that you might reveal to me God’s wisdom, compassion, love, and justice. I pray this so that through your inspiration I will be wise, so that I will be compassionate, so that I will be loving, and so that I will be just. Amen.
