Ordinary Time

Pause

Take my life and let it be,
consecrated Lord to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
Let them flow in endless praise,
Let them flow in endless praise.

Frances R. Havergal in “Take My Life, And Let It Be” (1874)

Wherever this day finds you,

Pause and take a deep breath.

Offer yourself humbly to the Lord in the stillness of these moments.

Listen

Then the Lord stretched out his hand, touched my mouth, and said to me, “I’m putting my words in your mouth. This very day I appoint you over nations and empires, to dig up and pull down, to destroy and demolish, to build and plant.”

Jeremiah 1:9-10

Think

Before I begin teaching, I often say a brief prayer that includes words such as, “Lord, may my words be your words. Speak through me.” It is my invitation to the Holy Spirit to guide my thoughts and words, as well as my acknowledgement that I am just a messenger proclaiming God’s truth. Jeremiah was also a messenger, who was called by God to prophesy to the nations. He was not called to share his own words or message, but rather the message the Lord put in his mouth. I liken it to Jeremiah being the megaphone through which the Lord spoke to the people; he was the avenue by which the message spread.

We are also like megaphones, called to share God’s truth. We have been commissioned by God to share the good news of Jesus as we go about our daily lives. What a joy to know that we do not have to rely on our own words, but rather we can ask the Holy Spirit to speak through us. Who can you share the good news of Jesus with today?

Pray

Lord I am but a vessel for your service, the avenue by which you have chosen to spread the good news of Jesus.

May your words be my words.

Speak through me.

Amen.

Go

Take my will and make it thine
it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart it is thy own;
it shall be thy royal throne,
it shall be thy royal throne.

Frances R. Havergal in “Take My Life, And Let It Be” (1874)

Surrender.

Give over to God your whole heart.

Live in the fullness of God’s grace this day.
