Make me aware of your presence that wonder may have its way with me, my passion be released, my confidence renewed in the depths of your holiness …

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. I will ask the Father, and he will send another Companion, who will be with you forever. This Companion is the Spirit of Truth, whom the world can’t receive because it neither sees him nor recognizes him. You know him, because he lives with you and will be with you.”

John 14:15-17

Think

It was the first Bible study together after “promotion Sunday.” That was the day when all the new 6th graders became part of the youth group. We read a scripture together and then I asked a question: “Where do you see God?”

Before any other students could answer, one 6th grade boy blurted out, “You can’t see God; God is invisible!” He had taken my question literally. Beneath his quick answer though was a deeper realization. Seeing God isn’t easy. We must rely on different ways of “seeing.”

Thankfully, Jesus promises to give his followers an “Advocate” or “Companion” to help us recognize God’s presence. Like any good friend, the Spirit is with us, encouraging us and helping us. This constant presence of the Spirit or “Companion” helps us see God’s work and helps us to remember our calling to love Jesus and one another. In acts of love we often see God show up in surprising ways.

What are some ways you could see God today? Who around you might be making God’s love visible?

Pray

Spirit of the Living God, be with me, today. Be with me, forever. Help me to recognize you as my true Companion and find my place in your love for me. Amen.

Go

Go and chase the love that has called you,

Go and seek the truth that has found you,

Go and rest in the peace that grounds you,

Recognizing God is with you wherever you may go.

Amen.
