Ordinary Time

Make me aware of your presence that wonder may have its way with me, my passion be released, my confidence renewed in the depths of your holiness …

Ted Loder in Guerillas of Grace: Prayers for the Battle (1981)

“Nor is God served by human hands, as though he needed something, since he is the one who gives life, breath, and everything else. From one person God created every human nation to live on the whole earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands. God made the nations so they would seek him, perhaps even reach out to him and find him. In fact, God isn’t far away from any of us. In God we live, move, and exist. As some of your own poets said, ‘We are his offspring.’”

Acts 17:25-28

Think

Good artists leave their mark on the works they create. Singers and songwriters may have a signature way of singing and writing that marks their work as their own. Visual artists may have a specific style that sets their work apart from others. Actors each have their own way of using their body, voice, and expression to play a part.

Like any great artist, God marks the good works God has done. In Genesis 2, God breathes life into the dust to create humanity. Even now God breathes life within you, animating your very being. Paul says that we live, move, and exist in God. Each one of us is sustained by God’s goodness and uniqueness, made to reflect the image of God.

Because our very life is animated by God, we are born to reach for God. Too often we reach for created things, when we are really made to reach for the Creator – the master artist who makes all things beautiful and full of life. How might you realize and reach out to the God who gives you life?

Pray

God Who Gives Me Life, breathe in me anew this day, that I may feel your presence. Breathe in me that I may come to life, reflecting your image to those around me. Amen.

Go

Go and chase the love that has called you,

Go and seek the truth that has found you,

Go and rest in the peace that grounds you,

Recognizing God is with you wherever you may go.

Amen.
