Amazing grace! How sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

John Newton in “Amazing Grace” (1779)

Consider today: God is searching for you. Grace awaits.

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength because he considered me faithful. So he appointed me to ministry even though I used to speak against him, attack his people, and I was proud. But I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and without faith. Our Lord’s favor poured all over me along with the faithfulness and love that are in Christ Jesus.

What was Christ thinking? Why appoint Paul, who was proud, defiant, and combative, to spread the Gospel? In the same way, Christ sought out and appointed Peter as the Rock of the Church. If memory serves right, this “rock” denied Christ three times.

Here is the thing: When Christ has a mission for someone, like the one for Paul, his search isn’t like ours. We would look at a resume or references and past job performance. Christ is looking for faith and love, so we may be shocked at who is picked.

Too often, we think we aren’t good enough to carry out Christ’s mission. But Christ is the one who seeks and calls those who have the heart for the mission, and then equips them to carry it out.

All of my life I said I would go anywhere and do anything for Christ as long as I was not sent to Africa. Well, guess what. I returned from Africa a few months ago. Christ selected me for that mission and equipped me. What is he searching for you to do?
