Ordinary Time
It is you, Lord
Who came to save
The heart and soul
Of every [hu]man
It is you Lord
Who knows my weakness
Who gives me strength,
With thine own hand.
John Thompson and Randy Scruggs in “Sanctuary” (1982)
We sailed from Troas straight for Samothrace and came to Neapolis the following day. From there we went to Philippi, a city of Macedonia’s first district and a Roman colony. We stayed in that city several days. On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the riverbank, where we thought there might be a place for prayer. We sat down and began to talk with the women who had gathered.
Acts 16:11-13
Can you imagine traveling like St. Paul did, taking a day’s dangerous boat ride to a foreign land, where no one had even yet heard the good news of the gospel? Even in my imagination, my very real breath is almost taken away by the task ahead of St. Paul in this passage from Acts; likewise, my heart is moved and inspired by the trust and faith he had in our Lord and Savior’s saving grace.
Whether it is St. Paul, spreading the gospel with every step he took, or the first, wobbly steps taken by a child, our Lord knows each of our steps before we even take them. Whether our hearts are up to the challenge or not, we must trust God, who is faithful, to be with us along the way. We may not know where our earthly journeys will take us; but if we open our hearts to loving God and neighbor, our journeys will be blessed.

O Lord, help me to take the next step towards you.
Amen.
O teach my heart to know Your Word
And treasure all that I have heard
O raise this everlasting seed
To bear the fruit of Christ in me
