Ordinary Time

Pause

Scripture provides us with many ways — or postures — for approaching God.

Like in yoga or ballet, we can practice these postures. Breathing, stretching, bowing, moving, reaching.

Open yourself up to embracing the many different postures that we find within Scripture.

Listen

In righteousness you answer us, by your awesome deeds, God of our salvation— you, who are the security of all the far edges of the earth, even the distant seas. You establish the mountains by your strength; you are dressed in raw power. You calm the roaring seas; calm the roaring waves, calm the noise of the nations. Those who dwell on the far edges stand in awe of your acts. You make the gateways of morning and evening sing for joy.

Psalm 65:5-8

Think

Covered by a canopy of stars, we rode camels to the base of Mount Sinai. There we unloaded and finished the ascent by foot. As we reached the top, the sun began to peak out over the horizon and light up the mountainous lands below. I remember vividly thinking — this is it — this is what it means to be in awe. The beauty of it all amazed me. I was in awe of the way the world transitioned from utter darkness to light, of how quickly I moved from seeing only what was in front of me to seeing the vastness of creation, of the history and tradition in the place where I stood. In those moments, I grasped the posture of awe. I recognized how big and how wide our world is — and how big and how wide our God is.

Can you remember a time when you experienced awe? What did that moment have to teach you about God? Where can you find smaller moments to experience awe in your everyday life?

Pray

I am in awe of you, God. Thank you for this beautiful world and for the ways that it can astound and teach me. Help me to find ways to experience awe in all that I do. Amen.

Go

Know that no matter what posture you come with today, you are loved.

Silent, proud, humble, exhausted, alone, fearful, in awe.

May you go out into the world practicing each of these postures and exploring the ways that they draw you ever closer to the God who created you and loves you.

Amen.
