Ordinary Time
We are never so low that our Lord cannot raise us up.
God’s power was at work in Christ when God raised him from the dead and sat him at God’s right side in the heavens, far above every ruler and authority and power and angelic power, any power that might be named not only now but in the future.
Ephesians 1:20-21
One of my least favorite things about high school was all the people I found myself “under.” There were rude upperclassmen, under whose cruelty all the freshman like me had to suffer. There were teachers, under whose supervision I sometimes struggled. And there were principals and administrators, whose adherence to rules and regulations seemed like an oppressive force under which I had to fight to survive. Thankfully, that fight is over, and I am not surviving but thriving under God’s benevolent and merciful rule.
When we see our lives in the light of the risen Christ, who sits “at God’s right side in the heavens, far above every ruler and authority and power and angelic power, any power that might be named not only now but in the future,” our lives are set in perfect order (v. 20-21). No bully or teacher, no supervisor or CEO could ever interfere with this, neither could they truly upset the peace that we have as followers of Christ because God is in control.

Thank you, God, for those who hold positions of power and authority in my life.
Please enlighten them and me with the knowledge of who is really in control.
Amen.
I lift up my eyes to the hills—
from where will my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-2 (NRSV)
