Back to School
It’s a new school year. Time to get back to the books. Time for thinking and learning.
Where is my mind today? In a place of curiosity, faith, understanding, and love? Or preoccupied with fear, doubt, injury, and hatred?
I open my mind and invite God’s love to move through me.
“Teacher, what is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
He replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: You must love your neighbor as you love yourself.”
Matthew 22:36-39
I don’t know about you, but I get distracted. I come home after a long day and throw on my favorite TV show or start scrolling on my phone or do both at the same time. In conversation, I’ll catch myself thinking “Ugh – I don’t have time for this, I have something more important I need to do!” Or I get excited by something the other person said and… then I realize they’re still talking, and I’ve stopped paying attention to what they’re saying. Oops.
Perhaps there are times when you’ve felt distracted – preoccupied, worrying about the future, or fixating on the past. Times when your mind was “too busy,” at low bandwidth, or at capacity.
Try turning your focus, your presence, and your attention to God. Right now. Here I am. I put down my distractions, my preoccupations, my expectations. Nothing clouds my mind. In this moment and in my mind, I get to make a simple choice: “God” or “not God”?

Dear Lord, you have bestowed upon me a mind so powerful. Sometimes I wish you’d included an instruction manual… Help me to receive such a precious gift with a thankful heart. Guide me that I may make wise choices that are pleasing to you. Strengthen me that I might be a force for your love and will on Earth. I ask these things in your holy name. Amen.
Go unashamed and proudly, for God made you you.
You are a divine instrument of God’s peace.
No need to overthink it – go and play your song!
