Brothers and sisters, we ask you to respect those who are working with you, leading you, and instructing you. Think of them highly with love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

Think

This scripture reminds me of people who have been leaders in my own life. Who leads you? A parent? A friend? Growing up, I was blessed to be surrounded by leaders in my church who helped me grow in my relationship with Christ. I will always remember my Sunday school teachers who taught me to not be afraid of the “Goliaths” in the world, as well as older members of my church family who prayed for me and guided me along the way.

Paul tells the members of the church at Thessalonica, “Respect those who are working with you, leading you, and instructing you.” How can we acknowledge the people who have guided us on our walk with Christ? Could we one day become more like them and be a mentor to someone who was lost but is now found?

Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “Action springs not from thought, but from a readiness for responsibility.” As we get back together for a new school year that brings a lot of uncertainty, remind yourself that you have been led, then go out, take action, and do the same.

Pray

Come, Lord Jesus, and help me go from this time with an open heart to see your children as they are. Guide me through my actions and your word to be a shepherd to your flock. Although I face adversity, I know that your gracious hand is always there to guide me through. In Christ I pray. Amen.
