My husband told me about a song he used to sing as a kid growing up in Liberia and it goes like this: “The more we are together the happier we will be. When your friend is my friend and my friend is your friend, the more we are together the happier we will be.” I smirked at first at how simple it sounded but then realized this song is a wonderful celebration of community.

With all the ways people try to divide us with politics, race, sexuality, and religion, it can be easy to forget that we are all God’s people. The Psalm reminds us that we all belong to God. As we work together, befriend one another, and spend time getting to know each other, we are more likely to see this big community that God has given us. Consider how to counter divisiveness with intentional work for the beloved community of God. Community that is rooted in the truth that we are all God’s people calls us to be together in love, unity, and service.

God, thank you for the gift of community in my life. Help me to nurture relationships, celebrate differences, and embody a spirit of unity. Amen.
