Ordinary Time

Pause

Contemplate how you might bear fruit for God, for others, and for self.

Prepare and let God speak to you.

Listen

There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear expects punishment. The person who is afraid has not been made perfect in love. We love because God first loved us.

1 John 4:18-19

Think

What are you afraid of? We’re all afraid of something. Here are some of the things on my list of fears: I fear not having enough money as I approach retirement, health problems in my future, the loss of those close to me, death… need I go on? The bottom line is I’m too fearful.

This past year, I spent a good bit of time with a friend who was terminally ill. Our time taught me a lot about facing fear. You see, my friend never once acted fearfully or spoke of fear. He sought out meaningful relationships and relished each moment with others. His life ended in real peace.

Today’s verses say love drives away fear. It tells us as Christians that we love because God loved us first. I need to hear this. I mean, really hear it. God loves me. God’s perfect love can drive away my fear. Leaning into this truth could bring me greater peace. What about you?

Question to Ponder:

How does God’s love drive away fear?

Pray

God, when fear surfaces, let me feel your love.

Today I’m fearful about…

Give me your peace that passes understanding. In this day, I want to know your perfect love.

Amen.

Go

How can you bear fruit this day? “Clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” Doing so prepares you to bear God’s fruit.
