Ordinary Time
Loving God, open my eyes, ears, heart, and mind that I may more fully understand who you are and who you have created me to be.
Jesus looked up and saw the large crowd coming toward him. He asked Philip, “Where will we buy food to feed these people?” Jesus said this to test him, for he already knew what he was going to do.
Philip replied, “More than a half year’s salary worth of food wouldn’t be enough for each person to have even a little bit.”
John 6:5-7
In today’s Scripture, a large crowd has followed Jesus and his disciples. They not only want to see Jesus; they also need to be fed. Imagine Philip’s surprise when Jesus asks him, “Where are we going to buy food for everyone?”
Philip might have thrown his hands up and walked away, angry that he couldn’t do what Jesus was asking him to do. He might have worn himself out trying to collect money and find take-out for a party of 5,000. Instead, Philip is honest: Nothing we can come up with will feed this crowd. Philip acknowledges his limitations to Jesus, who is about to surprise Philip even more.
God has gifted each of us, and none of us has the ability to meet every need. Rather than giving up or having unhealthy expectations of ourselves, we can be honest with God about our concerns and limitations. And we can remember that when we come to the end of what we can do, Jesus is able to do more than we could ever imagine!

God, thank you that you do not expect me to meet every need on my own.
Please help me trust that when you call me to make a big impact, you will be there with me and work through me.
I am not alone!
Amen.
God has intentionally and wonderfully made you.
God has gifted you to impact the world with goodness and love.
