Ordinary Time

Pause

Loving God, open my eyes, ears, heart, and mind that I may more fully understand who you are and who you have created me to be.

Listen

Again he said, “To what can I compare God’s kingdom? It’s like yeast, which a woman took and hid in a bushel of wheat flour until the yeast had worked its way through the whole.”

Luke 13:20-21

Think

Sunday Morning Waffles was a tradition for a while in our family. Early each Sunday, my husband, Scott, would make waffles while the rest of us got ready for church. Many times when we sat down to eat, Scott would announce that he had added a secret ingredient to the waffle recipe, and we would try our best to identify it. Sometimes the ingredient remained a mystery, but most of the time it was obvious. Cinnamon, for example, was easy to identify. Even though Scott would add only a small amount of cinnamon to the waffle mix, we could taste it in each and every waffle. A little went a long way, and everyone got to enjoy it!

Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is like this, spreading and making its presence known. We are invited to be part of this transformative work. Every act of kindness, compassion, justice, and love, no matter how small, spreads through the world like cinnamon in waffle mix, like yeast in flour, making the world a better place for all God’s children.
