Loving God, open my eyes, ears, heart, and mind that I may more fully understand who you are and who you have created me to be.

Above all, show sincere love to each other, because love brings about the forgiveness of many sins. Open your homes to each other without complaining. And serve each other according to the gift each person has received, as good managers of God’s diverse gifts.

The 1995 film, Mr. Holland’s Opus, tells the story of Glenn Holland, a composer who takes a job as a high school music teacher. Like many of us, Mr. Holland wants to make a big impact in the world. After 30 years of teaching, he realizes that, rather than the music he composed on his own, his greatest impact on the world came through sharing his gift of music in the classroom with his students.

How many of us, like Mr. Holland, dream of making a big impact in the world? How many of us sometimes feel confused about how to do that? Our Scripture today offers guidelines for making the difference in the world that we long to make: love each other, welcome each other, and serve each other with the gifts God has given us. God has gifted each of us with unique character traits, personalities, talents, interests, and abilities. When we use these gifts to love and serve others, the impact is bigger than we could imagine!
