The Lord your God is with you.

God’s Spirit goes before you as you listen, think, and respond.

Listen

Teach us to number our days so we can have a wise heart.

Psalm 90:12

Think

If there has ever been a time to pay attention to “a day” it is now. In some ways we have no choice but to pay attention. There is news to read. Footage to follow. Governors and mayors update us daily with information about the pandemic, with updates and guidance about demonstrations for racial justice. At first, we kept count of the days (or someone did for us). And then the days began to drift into each other. The diagrams started to blend together. Our society’s trust of the information seems so divided.

To not pay attention is an escape. Sometimes it feels necessary. So we jump out of the counting/paying attention/numbering and just try to live.

But what might happen if we STAY in the days? If we do not escape but instead stay focused on what is going on?

The psalmist adds a great bit of incentive at the end of the sentence: “to have a wise heart.” A wise-hearted person is one who is not ignoring but truly looking to be aware of what is happening around them. And even further… they allow their life to be affected, changed, reformed, improved.

Pray

Guiding God, give me the courage to open my eyes to what is happening around me – to watch, read, observe, listen, ask questions, pray, and then count the ways you allow me to grow. Amen.

Go

Taking today’s moments into your breath, your heart, your hands and feet,

live what you hear from God today,

and tomorrow.
