Pause

Consider.

God is offering you rest and joy.

What's keeping you from grasping hold of these gifts?

Listen

I know that there’s nothing better for them but to enjoy themselves and do what’s good while they live. Moreover, this is the gift of God: that all people should eat, drink, and enjoy the results of their hard work.

Ecclesiastes 3:12-13

Think

It is hard to find the “American Dream” in scripture. “Make tons of money” just isn’t a Biblical refrain. In fact, the Bible doesn’t endorse capitalism or any of the ways we reduce people to being sources of labor or capital.

In economics, people are a means of production. To God, well, people are the thing that is produced. To God, we are an end unto ourselves and not merely something to be used up in producing (or consuming) retail goods.

What we hear in scripture is a call to enjoy life and “do what’s good” because by doing good we produce a kingdom-like world, and we allow the Holy Spirit to move within us, shaping us into merciful, servant-like disciples. In God’s economy, the production line points to new beings creating a new world of joy.

Unfortunately, we are often too busy building and buying to give much thought to the spiritual blueprint of God’s economy.

Pray

God, what do you want to produce through me? Is it simply a widget that will be sold in a store or online? Or might it be the eternal inclination toward doing good as a way of honoring you? Amen.

Go

Don’t think, “Yes, in the future, I ought to…”

Instead, do it.

Do it now.
