Ordinary Time
Take, o take me as I am.
Summon out what I shall be.
Set your seal upon my heart,
And live in me.
from “Take, O Take Me As I Am” by John L. Bell (1995)
Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are God’s Son. You are the king of Israel.”
Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these! I assure you that you will see heaven open and God’s angels going up to heaven and down to earth on the Human One.”
John 1:49-51
The first moment we see, hear, feel, or know God is moving in and through us is unforgettable. It is a special, holy gift. For me, there was a quiet evening at church camp that, despite twists and turns along the way, eventually led me to become a youth minister. Have you ever felt especially close to God? What made that moment so special?
As awesome and holy as that moment is when we first hear God’s still small voice, Jesus offers us similar words to those said to Nathaniel: Just wait. Hearing God’s call is just the beginning. Much more awaits in the days, months, years to come.
As we become more fully who God already knows us to be, we find ourselves amazed time and time again, in growing magnitude, at how well God has known us, loved us, and led us along a seemingly winding path. We are guided, moment by moment, to the greater things God is doing in the world, if only we are willing to appreciate or notice them.

God, you will continue to amaze me along this journey. In difficult moments, I’ll be wowed by your faithfulness. In joyous moments, I’ll be in awe of your blessing. In all moments, I’ll know your steadfastness and loving kindness. Thank you for the gift of a winding path and the opportunity to be known and called each step of the way. Amen.
The Creator of the Cosmos, the one who formed all that was or is or will be, is the same God who breathed breath into you, the one who knit you together, the one who knows you best, and the one who calls you.
Know this gift more deeply today, and share it as freely as you received it: You are called and known.
