Ordinary Time

Pause

Whenever the water struck a stone it had something to say,
and the water itself, and even the mosses trailing under the water.
And slowly, very slowly, it became clear to me what they were saying.
Said the river I am part of holiness.
And I too, said the stone. And I too, whispered the moss beneath the water.

Mary Oliver in “At the River Clarion” (Evidence, 2009)

What is God saying to you today? Through whom or what is God speaking?

Listen

When he finished speaking to the crowds, he said to Simon, “Row out farther, into the deep water, and drop your nets for a catch.”

Luke 5:4

Think

I have been in deep water. A few years ago, I learned to scuba dive in Australia. I had a lot of fear though. When you dive, you dive in pairs for safety, and I was so afraid I would mess up and harm my partner or myself. I was even afraid I might die. I agonized over whether to continue the diving lessons or to stop. I came really close to giving up. I was able to move through the fear and discomfort. I am so glad I did. Going into the deep water of the Great Barrier Reef was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. It was an awe-inspiring and divine encounter with sea life up close in its habitat.

Whenever I think about my trip, I remember how I almost missed out on witnessing God’s Creation in this way. Deep water scared me, but I will always be grateful I took the plunge.

Pray

God, whenever I find myself in deep water, do not let me sink into fear.

Give me courage to dive deeper into the life you have created for me.

And let me rest in the knowledge that there are no regrets in a life lived for you.

Amen.
