Ordinary Time
Whenever the water struck a stone it had something to say,
and the water itself, and even the mosses trailing under the water.
And slowly, very slowly, it became clear to me what they were saying.
Said the river I am part of holiness.
And I too, said the stone. And I too, whispered the moss beneath the water.
Mary Oliver in “At the River Clarion” (Evidence, 2009)
What is God saying to you today? Through whom or what is God speaking?
Whenever I am in deep trouble, you make me live again; you send your power against my enemies’ wrath; you save me with your strong hand.
The Lord will do all this for my sake.
Your faithful love lasts forever, Lord! Don’t let go of what your hands have made.
Psalm 138:7-8
I was a kid peering into a swimming pool. I wondered if I could touch the bottom. I did a cannonball into the pool. But I had forgotten something. I had no idea how to swim. I began sinking to the bottom, and I touched it. I started to move my legs and arms around, trying to go back to the surface. But I was only moving around, not up. I panicked. My movements became wild kicks and arms flinging. I was in the deep waters of this pool in very deep trouble. Suddenly, I felt a strong hand grab hold of me, and I was being pulled up and out of the water. My older brother, who had been with me, dove in to rescue me. My brother saved my life that day.
God is more powerful than my brother. And though God calls me to deep waters, I know that God will never leave me sinking in deep trouble. God’s hands made us. God’s hands hold us forever.

God, whenever I am in deep trouble do not let go of me, of what your hands have made.
Remind me of your love. Remind me that wherever I go, you are with me.
Amen.
Where there’s water on Earth, you find life as we know it.
