Ordinary Time

Pause

I close my eyes from the hurt.

I turn away from the bad.

I ignore the pleas for help.

But it remains.

How can I see the Good that comes from God, grows in God, belongs to God?

Listen

From now on, brothers and sisters, if anything is excellent and if anything is admirable, focus your thoughts on these things: all that is true, all that is holy, all that is just, all that is pure, all that is lovely, and all that is worthy of praise. Practice these things: whatever you learned, received, heard, or saw in us. The God of peace will be with you.

Philippians 4:8-9

Think

Whenever I try to lead change in a group, I encourage them to focus on the good they are doing and let go of the things that are not working. I try to do the same when I try to change myself. This is what the Apostle Paul says to the Philippians: Focus on the Good. The Excellent. The Admirable. The True. The Holy. The Just, Pure, Lovely, and Praiseworthy. And if we do, we won’t have time to have our wheels spinning with what is less than these.

The old cliche is true. Some people see the glass half empty. Some people see the glass half full. If we follow the God of the Universe, how can we see the deficit in anything? When God looked at creation at the very beginning of the story we tell, God declared it GOOD. God did not say, “good enough,” or “just okay.” What God declares as Good, let us celebrate and encourage in one another.

Pray

Lord, when I look at the world, may I do so with your eyes. May I see the good, the beautiful, and the best in all situations. May each face be your beloved Child. And in the hard times, let me see where you are already at work and show me where to join in. Amen.

Go

What we see is a choice.

How we see is a choice.

Today I can choose to commit to see the good in God’s world and to work to make the bad better.
