Ordinary Time

Pause

We are never alone. Our lives are knit together with those around us. What we do has the power to affect others. And God is present and active in our relationships and in our very being.

God is with you. Breathe deep the reality of God’s presence. Remember. Realize. God is with you.

Listen

Suppose someone sees you (the person who has knowledge) eating in an idol’s temple. Won’t the person with a weak conscience be encouraged to eat the meat sacrificed to false gods? The weak brother or sister for whom Christ died is destroyed by your knowledge. You sin against Christ if you sin against your brothers and sisters and hurt their weak consciences this way. This is why, if food causes the downfall of my brother or sister, I won’t eat meat ever again, or else I may cause my brother or sister to fall.

1 Corinthians 8:10-13

Think

Living a life for others is both a challenge and an adventure. It means that our lives belong not to us alone, but that our lives together are held and shared by the community. It means that the decisions we each make should be thought about in terms of how we will be able to help others and build up a strong community around us. Living a life for others means that our way of doing things sometimes goes on the back burner and that we do things differently because it helps others.

God invites us into this kind of living. The life of Jesus is an example of this kind of thinking and acting. Followers of Jesus are invited to live in a manner that our very lives are given away so others may know and experience the love of God. Take time today to write a thank-you note to someone who lives this kind of life for you.

God, thank you for the life of Jesus. Thank you for the countless people through the generations who have followed his example and lived lives for others. Help me to live my life for others too. Amen.
