Following the Star

Pause

Once the decorations come down, where do you notice the Christmas lights still shining?

Today, take a few moments to notice and remember the people, places, and experiences where you are continuing to see Christmas light.

Listen

A man named John was sent from God. He came as a witness to testify concerning the light, so that through him everyone would believe in the light. He himself wasn’t the light, but his mission was to testify concerning the light.

The true light that shines on all people was coming into the world. The light was in the world, and the world came into being through the light, but the world didn’t recognize the light. The light came to his own people, and his own people didn’t welcome him.

John 1:6-11

Think

Here is a verse from the classic children’s song, “This Little Light of Mine.”

Hide it under a bushel? No!
I’m going to let it shine
Hide it under a bushel? No!
I’m going to let it shine
Let it shine, all the time, let it shine.

We all know this. It does not make sense to light a candle then hide it away. You put it out where it can be seen and shine bright.

Each of us carries around a bit of the light of God. But because of all our skin and body parts, it sometimes can be hard to see the light like it is hiding under a bushel. We are not trying to hide the light. But we do have to find ways to let our light be more out in the open so others can see it and know that they are seeing a little bit of God’s light.

Pray

God, shine bright in my heart today. Let me find a way to shine the light of your love out into the world so all those I meet can see it. And as their hearts are brightened, help them to shine bright to others. Amen.

Go

Is the Christmas light still shining bright in you?

Take that light out into the world.

Live brightly so that others may take notice and be reminded of God’s love and light.
