Ordinary Time

Pause

Slow, steady, deep inhale through the nose, hands on stomach to feel your belly rise.
Slower, steady, deep exhale through the mouth.

Say LORD HAVE as you breathe in.
Say MERCY as you breathe out.

LORD HAVE (breathe in)
MERCY (breathe out)

Repeat one final time, allowing your body to reflect your heart’s desire and mind’s focus to pause with the Holy One.

Listen

God is famous for his wondrous works. The Lord is full of mercy and compassion.

Psalm 111:4

Think

Today’s passage is short, sweet, and simple. It’s a good one to memorize, and I hope we all try. Everyone has some opinion about who God is. Some wonder if a transcendent Spirit even exists. Others distrust a God who allows evil to exist as if God is all-controlling, interrupting our sense of liberty and responsibility. Some trust God as loyal love. The opinions about God are as wide as the oceans. But I don’t think our opinions themselves matter that much to God. I think what matters is how our opinions impact our actions and behaviors towards one another and this one earth we occupy together.

Christians have earned quite the reputation at times. While it’s not a primary goal to fix our image in the public eye, our witness of the Christian faith does matter. It matters to reflect mercy, compassion, kindness, and gentleness. It matters to live into the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5). It matters because faith, hope, and love are common threads shared through culture, time, and space. Our witness of the Christian faith matters because the gospel is good news for all.

Pray

As the psalmist sings aloud, “God is famous for his wondrous works. The Lord is full of mercy and compassion.”

Again I say, “God is famous for his wondrous works. The Lord is full of mercy and compassion.”

May I remember this again and again throughout this day and all the days of my life. “God is famous for his wondrous works. The Lord is full of mercy and compassion.”

Amen.

Go

May God the Creator bless you and keep you safe today.

May Jesus the Christ smile upon you and be gracious towards you.

May the Spirit of Mercy lead you along the path of truth and wisdom.

And all of God’s people say —

Amen.
