“Discernment is listening to the gentle voice of Love.”

– Henri Nouwen

Listen

But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Amos 5:24

Think

We make hundreds of choices every day, and most of them probably don’t feel very important. But wisdom recognizes that our choices rarely belong to us alone.

The prophet Amos lived among people who were very good at performing religious virtue. They worshiped and prayed and sacrificed, but these exercises had no impact on how they treated other people, especially those with less power. Suffice it to say, God was not impressed.

Amos tells them, let justice roll. He imagines God’s justice like water in a dry land—necessary for life, impossible to hoard, and meant to keep flowing.

Wisdom asks: do our choices help that water flow? Or are we getting in its way? Making wise choices means looking beyond what is easiest or safest for us and considering who else might be affected. God’s wisdom draws our attention outward, toward the neighbor, the stranger, and the world that God loves.

God of wisdom, help me notice your voice, trust your love, and choose the path that leads to life. Amen.
