Journey to the Cross

Pause

In the midst of silence, think of a word or phrase that describes Jesus to you today. Hold to that word/phrase and settle into it each time you feel stressed, rushed, saddened, hopeful, or thankful, and be reminded of the love that created us and sustains us.

Listen

In God’s wisdom, he determined that the world wouldn’t come to know him through its wisdom. Instead, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of preaching. Jews ask for signs, and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, which is a scandal to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.

1 Corinthians 1:21-23

Think

When you hear the word wisdom, who do you think of and why? Does anyone think of us?

Wisdom comes from experience and is often shared with another. We must be careful not to let wisdom become part of our arrogance. We seek wisdom so that we may learn and grow, not so that we might think we’re better than others.

Often, we are like the Jews and Greeks the scripture is talking about, in that we are looking for signs. We want to know God’s will for our lives, but we don’t often wait to see what God is telling us through the reading of scripture, prayer, or those in our circle. We don’t spend time seeking God and being open to God’s teaching. We want a quick answer without the waiting.

It takes wisdom to consider the way of love Jesus lived. We need to seek this way of love. It seems foolish to those who are controlled by greed and power, but in God’s wisdom, the way of love is how all people can flourish.

Question to Ponder:

How can you follow the way of love today?

Pray

Lord of the cross,

may our choices be bathed in prayer so that our decisions are wise.

May we read scripture daily as we seek to be in your presence.

Amen.

Go

May we keep the cross before us and not just during Lent. Let the cross guide our words, our deeds, and our heart’s desires.
