Ordinary Time

Pause

God, still my racing thoughts.

Help me to hear your voice.

Listen

Then God said, “I now give to you all the plants on the earth that yield seeds and all the trees whose fruit produces its seeds within it. These will be your food. To all wildlife, to all the birds in the sky, and to everything crawling on the ground—to everything that breathes—I give all the green grasses for food.” And that’s what happened. God saw everything he had made: it was supremely good.

There was evening and there was morning: the sixth day.

Genesis 1:29-31

Think

When you sense a nudging from God, you will be tempted to respond by thinking, “Can I do this?” Do I have the skills, time, and resources to be successful in this endeavor? But this isn’t Godly thinking because it centers on “I” and gives no consideration to what God might provide.

As we mature spiritually, we become more comfortable responding to God with a simple “yes,” knowing that provision follows mission. When our eyes are focused on God, there is no sense of scarcity, no question of whether we have what is needed. God is enough.

There is on old saying that goes, “God doesn’t call the equipped, God equips the called.” If you feel a sense of calling, even a nudging from God, it is wise to discern whether the calling is from God. A spiritual mentor can help in this. But once you have clarity that the calling is of God, do not waste time trying to calculate the odds of success. The results are up to God. You part is to simply go.

Pray

God, I wish I could keep my eyes on you. I am so easily distracted.

May your Spirit remind me each day to reflect on your abundance, the provision I need for whatever task you lay before me.

Amen.
