Ordinary Time
Love moves us to understand that we are created to live in relationship with God, with others, and with all of creation.
Enjoy the Lord, and he will give what your heart asks. Commit your way to the Lord! Trust him! He will act and will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, your justice like high noon. Be still before the Lord, and wait for him. Don’t get upset when someone gets ahead—someone who invents evil schemes.
Let go of anger and leave rage behind! Don’t get upset—it will only lead to evil.
Psalm 37:4-8
Society often drives us to compare our lives with those of others. Our excessive connection with social networks presents us with good things but also with many stories of lives that are not our own. These stories can and do create the anxiety of comparison. However, our psalm for today offers us a remedy: delight in God. As we delight in God’s presence, our comparisons fade away, and we begin to live in harmony with God’s will.
Have you ever paused and counted the blessings God has given you? Have you thought about your family, friendships, church, dreams, and miracles? All of these things help us understand that God is present. Delight is not only an emotion, but a daily choice to trust, to be quiet, to wait, and to restrain anger. By delighting in God’s presence, we find the space to develop a kingdom ethic that transcends our frustrations and envy.
